La Liga form table as Real Madrid and Barcelona suffer shock defeats
The destination of the La Liga title may already be clear if not confirmed just yet, but it has hardly been a vintage season for the biggest sides in the land.
Barcelona have got an 11-point lead at the top of Spain’s top flight with just seven games left to play and it’s only a matter of time before Xavi’s side wraps up the title. That being said, their recent form has left a fair bit to be desired and they’re somewhat limping towards the title.
The reason the gap is still so wide is Real are also faltering domestically. Their focus is clearly on winning the Champions League once again as Carlo Ancelotti cannot get the same tune out of his players when they face La Liga opposition.
Here is a look at where Barcelona and Real Madrid rank in the form table over the past six matches.
The form of Xavi’s side over the last six La Liga matches has been extremely mixed. It started with the massive game that likely clinched the title as they managed to beat Real Madrid 2-1 with a late Franck Kessie goal. A loss there would have made the run-in very interesting.
The Blaugrana followed that up with a 4-0 win at Elche to further show their deserved title credentials, but two 0-0 draws with Girona and Getafe took the shine away for many fans. It also created nerves ahead of a game against Atletico Madrid who have been in great form, but Ferran Torres‘ strike was enough to secure a 1-0 win.
On Wednesday night, though, Xavi’s side fell to a very disappointing 2-1 defeat away at Rayo Vallecano which again lowered fan morale, especially considering they are out of Europe and the Copa del Rey. Barça have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games in La Liga.

If Barcelona had a more consistent Real Madrid team behind them, there could have been a very interesting title race.
Their last six games in the league also began with the match against Barcelona. It was a major blow for Los Blancos to lose late on, but in truth, a draw would have been of little use. They had to win that game to stand a real chance of reeling Barça in.
They followed it up with an emphatic 6-0 win at home against Real Valladolid. After booking their place in the Copa del Rey final at Barcelona’s expense, Real Madrid were beaten 3-2 at home by Villarreal. Continuing the inconsistency, they then beat Cadiz and Celta Vigo 2-0, before Tuesday’s shocking 4-2 loss at Girona where Valentin Castellanos netted four times.

Atletico Madrid are are at the races right now and just two points away from their city rivals in the real standings.
