Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton: Eagles secure narrow win after second half onslaught

Crystal Palace moved into the top half of the Premier League table thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Southampton at Selhurst Park.

Odsonne Edouard scored the only goal of the game late in the first half, converting Tyrick Mitchell’s square ball into the penalty area after Wilfried Zaha had picked the pocket of Lyanco.

Both sides had chances to score before that breakthrough. Edouard couldn’t stretch enough to turn in Zaha’s cross, while Che Adams struck the post at the other end. Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu also had to make a good save from Ebere Eze when the score was still tied.

It was all Southampton in the second half. Vicente Guaita made good saves to deny both Adams and Stuart Armstrong – the latter also went on to hit the post.

Another Guaita save and near miss from James Ward-Prowse ultimately saw Palace hold onto their narrow lead.

Palace have now won three of their last five Premier League games, having only lost once during that spell, and compared to only one victory in their opening seven fixtures of the campaign.

For Southampton, it is now just one win in eight, although this was actually their first defeat since a heavy 4-0 defeat to Manchester City at the start of the month.
