A closer look at Lille and USMNT star Tim Weah

USMNT player Tim Weah enjoyed a phenomenal 2020/21 season with Ligue 1’s Lille as his side narrowly beat Paris Saint Germain for the trophy.

The striker served a vital role for his team, coming off of a severe injury to appear in 39 matches and provide five goals in all competitions.

This is his third Ligue 1 title, after playing a small part in PSG’s triumphant campaigns during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. But in 2019, Weah left to join Lille.

During his first season with the club, the New York-born striker made only three appearances before falling victim to an injury-riddled campaign. A thigh and hamstring injury sidelined the player for almost an entire year, surrounding Weah with doubt and disappointment.

Many questioned whether he could make a strong return to the pitch, but in 2020 he silenced critics. Weah recovered and quickly became a regular contributor for the team, making seven starts and 28 league appearances.

Earlier this season, Weah expressed to Ligue 1 his joy at being seen for the player he is and can be.

„I hope so,“ he replied when asked whether Lille fans were starting to see the real Timothy Weah. „I had a bad last season individually with injuries. I’ve forgotten that and I take this season as a reward for my work. I’m starting to play a lot of matches, to score some goals. For me, the most important thing is to keep going, improve, gain confidence, and work for the team. The goals will come naturally after that.“

Internationally, Weah just made USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter’s 23-man list ahead of the CONCACAF Nations League. He’s made 10 appearances for the national team, providing one goal and one assist.

His first breakout moment for the USMNT came in 2017, where he played a pivotal role in the Under-17 MNT’s success at the CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Panama. Later that year, he helped the team flourish at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in India.

The expectations for Weah are high as the son of one of George Weah, one of Africa’s most famous football players.
