Saul Niguez ‚decides to leave Atletico Madrid‘ despite La Liga title win

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has been tipped to try and leave the club this summer, with a number of Europe’s top clubs keeping an eye on any developments regarding the Spaniard.

Juventus, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have all shown previously interest in Saul, who is seemingly ready to embrace a new challenge after 337 games for Atletico.

Marca suggests that a sudden lack of starts this season, just 22 in La Liga compared to 35 in the previous campaign, has pushed the player towards a decision to move on. He didn’t start either Madrid derby and was substituted early in each of the final four games of the title run-in.

Even with the league triumph, his first with Atletico after spending the previous 2013/14 title season out on loan, it is said that Saul has still made his mind up that he wants to go.

He is thought to have first considered his future in 2019, only to end up frustrated by a lack of suitable offers that met Atletico’s demands.

The 26-year-old still has a contract that runs until 2026 after committing to a nine-season deal in the summer of 2017 and Marca suggests that wage demands in excess of €150,000 per week, on top of a sizeable transfer fee, could prove problematic in finding a buyer.

But, for now, other clubs are rumoured to at least be watching the situation.

Juventus are described as a ‘strong’ possible destination and are tipped for a squad overhaul after slipping to fourth place in Serie A and almost missing out on Champions League qualification after close to a decade of domestic domination.

Manchester United have been linked with Saul on and off for years and are in the market for a central midfielder if an opportunity arises – Declan Rice and Ruben Neves have caught most of their attention so far – while PSG are said to have made contact. Bayern, meanwhile, were impressed when they came up against the player and Atletico as far back as 2016.
