Thomas Tuchel will take charge of Bayern Munich for the first time on Saturday night when his new side take on former employers Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker.

Tuchel, who won the DFB-Pokal during two years in charge of Dortmund, surprisingly replaced Julian Nagelsmann at the Allianz Arena during the international break and his first outing is a major fixture in the Bundesliga title race.

Dortmund lead Bayern by a point at the top of the Bundesliga but haven’t won on their opponents‘ Bavarian turf in the league since 2014.

Here’s what you need to know about Saturday’s Klassiker.

Bayern Munich team news

Tuchel is without stalwart goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to start his reign, while Lucas Hernandez is also out for the rest of the season.

We’ll have to see which players the former Chelsea boss favours but a back three formation is on the cards which could help loan signing Joao Cancelo end his bench misery.

Leon Goretzka, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Jamal Musiala are fitness doubts but all have strong chances of starting or making the squad list.

Bayern Munich predicted lineup (3-4-2-1): Sommer; Pavard; Upamecano; De Ligt; Cancelo, Kimmich, Goretzka, Davies; Sane, Muller; Choupo-Moting.

Borussia Dortmund team news

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is expected to make his first appearance since late February, but the game might come too soon for top BVB league goalscorer Julian Brandt.

There are further fitness doubts over Youssoufa Moukoko and Karim Adeyemi, so Donyell Malen could partner Sebastian Haller and Marco Reus in attack.

Borussia Dortmund predicted lineup (4-3-3): Kobel; Wolf, Sule, Schlotterbeck, Ryerson; Ozcan, Can, Bellingham; Malen, Haller, Reus.

The magnitude of this occasion cannot be overstated. Tuchel is the latest star in German football to cross both sides of the Bayern and Dortmund divides and he does so with the Bundesliga title race much closer at this stage of the season than usual.

By the start of April in 2021/22, Bayern were 12 points clear of Dortmund. The drop-off this season led to Nagelsmann’s departure and has been well exploited by Edin Terzić’s BVB, who haven’t won a league title since 2012.

Saturday’s visitors could have a few key attackers sidelined, so expect the new manager bounce to take full force come full time.

Prediction: Bayern Munich 2-0 Borussia Dortmund
