Business

Despite the weather threatening to disrupt the schedule, all 12 teams were in action across another entertaining weekend of the WSL.

Arsenal and Manchester United maintained their perfect start to the season to leave nothing to separate the pair at the league summit, while Manchester City recorded another big win and West Ham and Everton continued their impressive starts.

But which players stood out in particular? Here’s 90min’s WSL team of the week for gameweek four.

GK: Ann-Katrin Berger (Chelsea) – Made a pair of crucial saves with Chelsea leading 1-0 to preserve her side’s advantage; first getting down low and tip Elisabeth Terland’s effort around the post, and then keeping out Katie Robinson with her feet from close range.

RB: Eve Perisset (Chelsea) – Linked up well with the similarly lively Johanna Rytting Kaneryd down the Chelsea right, caused chaos with a series of dangerous deliveries and cracked the bar with a fizzing effort from the edge of the box.

CB: Steph Catley (Arsenal) – Continuing to fill in at centre-back, helped the Gunners to their 10th consecutive WSL clean sheet and caused plenty of problems from her wicked set piece delivery.

CB: Rikke Sevecke (Everton) – Made an important, goal line headed clearance to keep out Rachel Daly in the first half and turned in a resilient display as Everton dug in to record their fourth clean sheet in five matches.

LB: Gabby George (Everton) – A real asset going forward for the Toffees from left wing back, producing a fantastic show of strength and pace to burst past Sarah Mayling and a fabulous delivery to the back post for Lucy Graham to net Everton’s winner.

Frida MaanumFrida Maanum

CM: Yui Hasegawa (Manchester City) – Seamlessly slotting into this Manchester City team. Oozed class from start to finish, always eager to get on the ball and so cool and composed in possession.

CM: Melisa Filis (West Ham) – Instrumental in West Ham’s win over Reading with a pair of assists; the first a wicked cross onto the head of Dagny Brynjarsdottir, the second a perfectly weighted through ball to carve open the Royals‘ backline. Caused problems all afternoon with her running and energy.

CM: Frida Maanum (Arsenal) – Rewarded for her swashbuckling performance against Lyon last time out with her first WSL start of the season, and marked it with a terrific solo goal, demonstrating fabulous feet to work the space for herself followed by a powerful finish. Turned in an all round excellent display.

FW: Caitlin Foord (Arsenal) – Teed up Maanum for Arsenal’s second goal and was a danger throughout for Arsenal with her weaving runs and energy. She was everywhere for the Gunners.

FW: Bunny Shaw (Manchester City) – Continued her magnificent goal scoring start to the season with a brace to see off Spurs. The first was a trademark Shaw header, giving her marker the slip and powering home. The second was a fabulous individual effort, finding the bottom corner with a low drive from range.

FW: Viviane Asseyi (West Ham) – West Ham’s statement summer signing netted two goals in the space of seven first half minutes to get up and running for the Hammers. Her first was a powerful finish from close range, and this was followed by a smart run in behind and coolly-taken second.
