Manchester United midfielder Lucy Staniforth has signed a new one-year contact with the club until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Having arrived on a two -year deal from Birmingham in the summer of 2020, Staniforth was out of contract at the end of the last campaign. But she returned to pre-season with the rest of the available squad and her extension has been announced by the club.

“I’m really grateful to be given this opportunity and want to make sure I hit the ground running this season and contribute as much as I can. I feel great in myself and I’m really looking forward to the new campaign,“ Staniforth said.

United boss Marc Skinner added, „Lucy’s professionalism on and off the field continues to be exemplary. We are delighted that she will continue to lend her experience to this group of players, setting a clear example for her teammates to follow. We look forward to utilising Lucy’s versatility for the successful season ahead.”

Staniforth was in and out of the United lineup in the first half of last season, before undergoing surgery in the New Year and missing around four months. She only returned to action in the final three weeks of the season but still commanded a place in England’s provisional Euro 2022 squad.

Due to turn 30 in October, and a WSL veteran of 11 years, the former Sunderland and Liverpool player provides significant experience in the United squad.

United have been busy in the summer transfer window as they try to again challenge for a top three WSL place and Champions League qualification.

Adriana Leon, Rachel Williams, Grace Clinton, Maya Le Tissier and Lucia Garcia have arrived in that respect to strengthen positions all over the pitch.
