Manchester United duo Jadon Sancho and Luke Shaw have been left out of Saturday’s matchday squad to face Atletico Madrid with illness.

The Red Devils take on the Spanish side in Oslo in their penultimate pre-season friendly – their final fixture comes at home to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag had been hoping to give appropriate game time to all of his squad on the eve of the new season, but has been dealt a blow with Shaw and Sancho feeling ill.

Shaw was omitted from Man Utd’s travelling party to Oslo on Friday, though it had been assumed this was due to being rested to take on Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford.

However, it is now being reported that he instead remained home due to illness.

Sancho did travel to Norway however, and the decision to leave him out of the squad was a late one having woken up feeling ill on Saturday morning.

He had been expected to start on the right wing of a 4-2-3-1 formation, and Anthony Elanga will instead play there.

Man Utd starting lineup vs Atletico Madrid (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dalot, Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia; McTominay, Fred; Elanga, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.
