England right-back Lucy Bronze has admitted she simply ‚couldn’t say no to Barcelona‘ once she found out the Blaugrana were interested in signing her.

The 30-year-old left Manchester City at the end of the 2021/22 WSL season following the expiration of her contract and a potential move to the NWSL in the US seemed a likely destination.

However, Barcelona Femeni confirmed that they had won the race for Bronze’s signature on Saturday, and in her first interview since signing for the Catalans, she revealed that the chance to join such a prestigious club was too good to turn down.

„I’m just really excited to play for a club like Barcelona. It’s incredible, [they are] one of the biggest teams in the world. I’m excited about it, I can’t wait to get into training with the girls,“ Bronze said.

„At the end of the season, I was already leaving my old club anyway. After a couple of conversations, as soon as I had an offer and I knew that Barça were interested, you can’t say no to Barcelona. I had to come, I’m just really excited.

„The team is already amazing, they play amazing football and obviously win a lot of trophies. They were unfortunate in the Champions League final but I know that the club’s aspirations and goals are to win Champions League titles, that’s the goal I have as well. Hopefully [we can add] more silverware to the trophy cabinet, and as a player hopefully add some energy in attack and defence.

„I’m just so happy to be here. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans, get in the stadium and I’m going to do everything I can for this club to make sure we can win trophies together.“

Bronze will now reconvene with the England squad ahead of their Euro 2022 campaign on home soil. The Lionesses kick the tournament off against Austria at Old Trafford on July 6.
