WSL team of the week – gameweek 20
The Women’s Super League season is edging towards its climax and there were a string of significant results over the weekend.
Chelsea showed a champion’s mentality to beat Spurs despite being a player down, Man Utd fluffed their lines in the Champions League race and there was even a victory for struggling Birmingham City.
Here are the 11 players that impressed most in gameweek 20…
Sian Rogers (GK) – Aston Villa: Deputising for the absent Hannah Hampton, Rogers stepped up to the plate and made six saves to help Villa secure a surprise point against Man Utd.
Anita Asante (CB) – Aston Villa: Rolled back the years with a vintage defensive display to thwart the Red Devils. One goal-saving block was particularly outstanding.
Louise Quinn (CB) – Birmingham: Quinn has endured a testing season attempting to plug the gaps in Birmingham’s leaky defence. However, she has been effective in the other box, bagging a brace for the basement dwellers in their rare win over Brighton – her fourth and fifth goals of the campaign.
Alex Greenwood (CB) – Man City: Oozed classed in her side’s comfortable 4-0 win over Leicester City. Capped off a fine display with a late penalty.
Yui Hasegawa (RWB) – West Ham: Hasegawa was just too good not to include. The youngster registered a goal and assist in West Ham’s 2-1 victory over Reading, essentially winning her side the match.
Erin Cuthbert (CM) – Chelsea: Chelsea could have easily crumbled after going a goal down against Spurs and then seeing Ann-Katrin Berger dismissed. However, they stood firm and secured the victory, partially thanks to an incredible all-round midfield display from Cuthbert.
Caroline Weir (CM) – Man City: Weir was typically imperious against the Foxes, opening the scoring and then helping City strangle the game for the full 90 minutes.
Guro Reiten (LWB) – Chelsea: Her cross-cum-shot which levelled the scores in the London derby could prove to be a decisive moment in the WSL title race.
Beth Mead (RW) – Arsenal: Sunday’s victory over Everton was a special day for Mead. Not only did she and teammate Jordan Nobbs bring up a half-century of WSL goals, she also set a new all-time assist record for the competition. Not a bad day’s work.
Veatriki Sarri (ST) – Birmingham: Sarri has been starved of service for much of the season, so it was great to see her hard work rewarded with a goal and an assist this weekend.
Lauren Hemp (LW) – Man City: More praise for City. To finish up we’re honouring Hemp, who notched her seventh goal and second assist of the season on Sunday.
