Frank Lampard hints at refereeing bias following Merseyside derby defeat

Frank Lampard has suggested that Everton were not awarded a penalty in Sunday’s Merseyside derby as referees are biased towards Liverpool during games at Anfield.

Just after the break Anthony Gordon, who performed superbly throughout but was booked for simulation in the first half, raced through on goal before going to ground after being engaged by Joel Matip. But Stuart Attwell did not point to the spot and the decision was not referred to VAR.

At that stage the scores were level, with second-half goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi eventually giving Liverpool a 2-0 victory.

Speaking at full-time, Lampard insisted that his side should have got a penalty.

„Well it’s a penalty in the second half. You don’t get them here. If it’s Mo Salah at the other end, it’s a penalty,“ he said.

Lampard went on to claim that the officiating in general disappointed him. „The ref was quick to whip a yellow card and when the little stuff went off in the middle of pitch and if you look back at that with VAR, there’s some questionable things going on in that, too. Maybe that’s to be expected when you come here.“

The defeat leaves the Toffees marooned in the relegation zone, although they do boast a game in hand over 17th-placed Burnley, whom they trail by two points.
