Barcelona vs Real Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals set a new attendance world record for a women’s football match, with over 91,553 spectators packing into Camp Nou to watch the action.

Barça ran out easy winners on the night, romping to a 5-2 victory in what was the second leg of the fierce rivals‘ last-eight meeting. The previous fixture had been a much tenser affair, with Barcelona going 1-0 up and requiring a controversial penalty to turn the tide, eventually securing a 2-1 victory.

As soon as Camp Nou was announced as the venue for Wednesday’s clash, efforts were made to clinch the world record. Prior to the match the highest attendance at a women’s game was 91,185, recorded at a 1999 Women’s World Cup clash between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl.

That number was eclipsed in Barcelona with 91,553 spectators treated to a blockbuster contest.

There has, however, been claims of a higher attendance back in 1971 in the final of an unofficial World Cup, the final of which saw Denmark beat Mexico in front of an estimated 110,000-strong crowd in the Azteca Stadium.

This fixture is not recognised as an official game, meaning it does not make it into the record books.

Back at Camp Nou, the hosts took the lead when Mapi Leon’s deep cross sailed over Misa’s head, but Los Blancos levelled soon after through an Olga Carmona penalty.

Real then made it 2-1 thanks to an ingenious strike from Claudio Zornoza, before Barcelona netteed four without reply to ease into the Champions League semi-finals.

La Blaugrana are looking to defend their crown this season, after decimating Chelsea 4-0 in last year’s final.
