Barcelona 5-2 Real Madrid: Player ratings as Barça ease into UWCL semi-finals
Barcelona provided plenty of entertainment for the world-record crowd packed inside Camp Nou on Wednesday night, smashing rivals Real Madrid 5-2 to romp into the Women’s Champions League semi-finals.
In front of a incredible 91,553 spectators, the hosts barely let Real have a kick in the opening exchanges. They made their dominance pay in the eighth minute when Mapi Leon swung in a deep cross which beat everyone, including a scrambling Misa in the opposition goal.
Against the run of play, Real were awarded a penalty on the quarter-hour mark with Irene Paredes penalised for handling Olga Carmona’s shot inside her own box. And Carmona made no mistake from 12 yards, rolling the ball into the corner even though Sandra Panos guessed the right way.
Barcelona resumed their dominance for the remainder of the first half with Alexia Putellas and Caroline Graham Hansen both missing presentable chances.
The second period got off to a lightning start with Real poking their noses ahead on the night in scintillating fashion. Claudia Zornoza was the scorer, spotting Panos off her line and producing an incredible 40-yard lob to make it 2-1.
Los Blancos‘ lead did not last long though, with Barça netting twice in three minutes to shock their visitors. Aitana Bonmati scored the first, creating an angle for herself before firing into the bottom corner.
Claudia Pina then pounced for her side’s third, making the most of some good fortune and lifting the ball over Misa.
The goals kept on coming in the second half with Putellas getting in on the act with a scrappy finish just after the hour. The impressive Graham Hansen was then rewarded for her hard work 20 minutes from time, sliding in at the back post to put away Fridolina Rolfo’s deflected cross.
Thankfully for Real, Barcelona took their foot off their gas for the remainder of the second half, safe in the knowledge that their place in the final four was assured.
Here are your player ratings from a historic night in Catalonia…
Sandra Panos (GK) – 4/10 – Could not keep out the penalty, despite diving the right way. Made to look silly by Zornoza’s brilliance.
Marta Torrejon (RB) – 7/10 – A constant attacking threat who combined well with Graham Hansen.
Irene Paredes (CB) – 6/10 – Harshly penalised for handball. Then again, you cannot be positioning your arms like that in 2022. Comfortable after that, covering well at times.
Mapi Leon (CB) – 8/10 – Opened the scoring with a cross-cum-shot early on. Helped Barcelona strangle the game with her accurate passing.
Fridolina Rolfo (LB) – 7/10 – Pushed high to provide the Barcelona midfield with width. Did end up with an assist, but Pina was surely not the intended recipient of her pass…
Alexia Putellas (CM) – 8/10 – Missed a presentable chance before the break but eventually got her goal in the second half. Not her best game but still ended with four key passes. That’s how high her standards are.
Patri Guijarro (CM) – 7/10 – Not the showiest performance but she minimised her mistakes and was steady.
Aitana Bonmati (CM) – 9/10 – Popped up in the half-space with cute passes and one-twos. Took her goal so, so well. Such a classic Barcelona player.
Caroline Graham Hansen (RW) – 8/10 – Heavily involved. She beat a host of players with her world-class dribbling but needed to be a bit more clinical in the first half. Scored in the second period.
Jenni Hermoso (ST) – 7/10 – Linked things pretty well in the final third. Dropped deep to help out with build-up. Got an assist too.
Claudio Pina (LW) – 8/10 – Got lucky in the build-up to her goal, but there was nothing fortunate about the finish, which was of the highest quality.
Ingrid Syrstad Enge (CM) – 6/10
Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic (RB) – 6/10
Leila Ouahabi (ST) – 6/10
Melanie Serrano (LW) – N/A
Andrea Pereira (CB) – N/A
Misa (GK) – 3/10 – Caught out by Leon’s cross early on which set the tone for a pretty miserable evening.
Lucia Rodriguez (RB) – 4/10 – Picked up an early booking and was never comfortable against Pina.
Babett Peter (CB) – 5/10 – Kept extremely busy by Barcelona’s rotating cast of midfielders and forwards. Fared okay to be honest, despite the five goals she shipped.
Ivana (CB) – 3/10 – Megged by Graham Hansen early on. Should have kept out Putellas‘ effort but stumbled at the last minute.
Sofie Svava (LB) – 4/10 – Tried to progress her side down the pitch but did not have much success. Defending was shaky.
Teresa Abelleira (CM) – 4/10 – Provided Real’s midfield with some much-needed bite, but Barcelona’s combinations often bamboozled her.
Claudia Zornoza (CM) – 6/10 – Lit up Camp Nou with a piece of magic early in the second half.
Maite Oroz (AM) – 3/10 – A peripheral figure in possession. Barcelona players streamed past with ease too.
Athenea del Castillo (RW) – 3/10 – Massively underwhelming. Just could not get into the game.
Esther Gonzalez (ST) – 4/10 – Needed to time her runs better, as she was caught offside several times.
Olga Carmona (LW) – 6/10 – Made no mistake from the penalty spot in the first half. Not a much success other than that but she tried to be direct.
Nahikari Garcia (ST) – 5/10
Caroline Moller (LW) – 5/10
Kenti Robles (LB) – N/A
Rocio Galvez (CB) – N/A
