Mohamed Salah misses penalty as Egypt fail to qualify for World Cup

Mohamed Salah missed a vital spot kick as Egypt fail to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Liverpool superstar ballooned his penalty over the crossbar in a penalty shootout – being one of three Egypt players to miss from the spot – with Senegal qualifying at his nation’s expense.

Egypt had taken a 1-0 lead into the second leg meeting in Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade, but that lead was erased by Senegal after just four minutes. Boulaye Dia capitalised on some slack defending from a set piece at the start of the game to sweep home.

Senegal had dominated the rest of normal and extra-time, firing in 25 shots at goal while Egypt managed just five in 120 minutes of football, but they were unable to find the all-important winner.

So, to penalties we went.

The shootout was full of terrible penalty kicks (five were missed by the two sides combined), laser pointing (which clearly didn’t help Salah when he stepped up to take his penalty), and eventually, a winning penalty from a Liverpool superstar: Sadio Mane.

Mane kept his composure to fire home the winning penalty and send Senegal to their third ever FIFA World Cup.
