UEFA will eliminate Spartak Moscow from this season’s Europa League as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week.

Dozens of football bodies and federations have spoken out against Russia and support the implementation of sanctions against the country, such as the boycotting of fixtures against the their national and club teams.

FIFA recently ruled that Russia would be stripped of their official colours and national anthem among other assets and would have to play under the name ‚Football Union of Russia‘. This decision has been heavily criticised for not being harsh enough, with the country still able to compete for a place at the World Cup despite their play-off opponents determined not to fulfil game against them.

And German publication Bild report UEFA will announce that Spartak Moscow will be dumped out of the Europa League.

The Russian club advanced to the last 16 after topping a group containing Napoli, Leicester and Legia Warsaw, but are expected to forcibly forfeit their upcoming tie with RB Leipzig.

Die Roten Bullen will receive a bye into the quarter-finals, having qualified for the knockout stage with a play-off round win over Spanish outfit Real Sociedad.

Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff told Bild that he expects to receive confirmation of Spartak’s elimination shortly and he has full trust in UEFA to make the right decision.

UEFA have already stripped initial hosts St Petersburg of this year’s Champions League final, with the showpiece event now set to take place in Paris.
