Relegation-battling Augsburg host a Borussia Dortmund side reeling from their European elimination on Sunday afternoon.

With a third of the season left to play, Augsburg have slumped into the Bundesliga’s relegation play-off spot after one win from their last eight outings.

Dortmund earned a 2-2 draw away to Rangers on Thursday which wasn’t enough to preserve their participation in this season’s Europa League, leaving them with just the league to focus on.

Here’s all you need to know about Sunday’s meeting between two clubs at opposite ends of the table.

Andre Hahn picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the defeat to Freiburg last weekend, sidelining the winger for Dortmund’s visit.

Full-back Robert Gumny, who started the club’s opening 20 Bundesliga matches, is bound to the treatment room with Tobias Strobl.

Arne Maier was cleared with a negative COVID test ahead of last weekend but the lesser-spotted defender Frederik Winther delivered a positive result.

Marco Rose is running perilously short of natural centre-backs as Dan-Axel Zagadou joined Manuel Akanji among the injured ranks when he limped off with a thigh complaint last weekend.

Alongside long-term absentee Mateu Morey (ACL), the young US international Gio Reyna has suffered a recurrence of the hamstring problem that has already robbed him of five months this season.

While Erling Haaland is yet to be risked, the club’s talismanic captain Marco Reus was forced off in the closing stages of their European defeat with an injury concern. Thomas Meunier, Emre Can, and Raphael Guerreiro also picked up knocks.

FC Augsburg, in the form we know it now, only emerged in 1969. By that time Dortmund had already won three national league titles, the German Cup and the Cup Winners‘ Cup.

The pair have met just 21 times in the German top flight since Augsburg’s promotion in 2011. Dortmund have only lost three of these encounters but they were defeated on their previous visit to the WWK Arena.

Dortmund haven’t exactly been a picture of consistency in any competition this season, whether Haaland was storming around the top of the pitch or incessantly zoomed in on while pensively watching from the stands.

The loss of Reus for any significant length of time would be another hefty blow. However, the genuine title challengers – who lie just six points behind Bayern Munich – should have enough in reserve to overcome an Augsburg side sitting 16th.

Prediction: Augsburg 1-3 Dortmund
