England’s Euro 2022 preparations were given a boost as they were crowned the inaugural winners of the Arnold Clark Cup with a 3-1 victory over Germany.

Millie Bright and Fran Kirby popped up with two late goals, after Ellen White’s opener was cancelled out by a superb Lina Magull free kick.

England topped the standings of the first edition of the round robin friendly tournament with five points, finishing ahead of Spain on goal difference.

The Lionesses picked up draws against Canada and Spain in their opening two matches, before their win over Germany confirmed Sarina Wiegman’s side as champions.

Spain had beaten Canada 1-0 in the day’s earlier fixture to leave them top of the pile, with Alexia Putellas‘ tidy finish in the first half following a slick team move enough to see La Roja past the Olympic champions.

The triumph will leave England in high spirits heading into this summer’s European Championships on home soil. The Lionesses will be one of a handful of teams going into the tournament with hopes of lifting the trophy – as manager Wiegman did with the Netherlands back in 2017.

The former Netherlands boss has used the Arnold Clark Cup as an opportunity to experiment ahead of the Euros, with different player combinations and positional selections tried out.

England are next in action in April, with two World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Northern Ireland.
