Wolves 2-1 Leicester: Player ratings as Foxes falter again
Leicester City’s wait for a Premier League win was extended to five games on Sunday after a ruthless Wolves side beat the Foxes 2-1 at Molineux.
Brendan Rodgers‘ charges played well in spells but a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal and the same familiar problems at the back saw them slump to a tenth defeat of the season. Meanwhile, Wolves move up to seventh, just six points shy of fourth-placed Manchester United with two games in hand.
Leicester’s typically feeble defence collapsed inside 10 minutes. The Foxes failed to clear their lines and Ruben Neves made no mistake when the ball broke to him on the edge of the box, caressing it into the bottom corner.
The Foxes responded well to going behind with some poor finishing preventing them from drawing level. That changed just before the break though, when Ademola Lookman did equalise.
Youri Tielemans was instrumental in the build-up splitting Wolves open with a terrific pass, which found the run of Marc Albrighton, who then provided the ball Lookman required to slide home.
Leicester began the second half in the same vein, with Lookman continuing to cause issues with his direct running and Tielemans letting a decent chance go begging just after the hour mark.
The visitors were made to rue not making their dominance count 24 minutes from time when Daniel Podence popped up to net a rare Premier League goal. Wolves worked the ball nicely to the diminutive forward whose precise effort nestled in the bottom corner.
After this, Wanderers understandably retreated into a low block and were largely successful in repelling the opposition.
Here are your player ratings for both sides…
Jose Sa (GK) – 7/10 – Distribution was nothing short of miraculous considering the adverse weather conditions.
Max Kilman (CB) – 7/10 – His bounding stride out of defence kicked off the move that resulted in Wolves‘ second goal. His fine season continues.
Conor Coady (CB) – 6/10 – Standard from Coady. Sat deep and frustrated Leicester for the most part.
Romain Saiss (CB) – 7/10 – Mopped up Leicester’s attempts to get in behind him effectively, finishing the game with 11 clearances.
Nelson Semedo (RWB) – 4/10 – Not great. Pretty wasteful in possession and not always convincing against Lookman.
Ruben Neves (CM) – 7/10 – Added another fine goal from outside of the box to his collection. Got through a decent amount of defensive work as well.
Leander Dendoncker (CM) – 5/10 – Meh. The game passed him by, but he did offload to Podence to score.
Joao Moutinho (CM) – 6/10 – Not always on the ball but when he was he looked like Wolves most creative midfielder. Hooked on the hour as Wolves changed shape.
Rayan Ait-Nouri (LWB) – 6/10 – Went close with a first-half effort which whistled past the post. Albrighton and Pereira’s doubling up caused him issues.
Raul Jimenez (ST) – 5/10 – Got off to a flying start with his classic, number-nine hold-up play leading to Neves‘ goal. Quiet after that. Very quiet.
Daniel Podence (ST) – 7/10 – His first touch was ridiculously good at times and he got in behind Soyuncu well. Finished so, so well in the second half.
Hwang Hee-chan (ST) – 6/10 – Added vigour to the Wolves lineup.
Pedro Neto (ST) – N/A – Great to see him back after so long.
Marcal (LWB) – N/A
Kasper Schmeichel (GK) – 4/10 – Got a hand on Neves‘ strike but could not keep it out. Poor. Nothing he could do about the second.
Ricardo Pereira (RB) – 6/10 – Toasted his new contract with a solid display for the most part. Some of his forward runs caused the opposition serious problems. However, he was beaten too easily by Ait-Nouri in the lead up to Wolves‘ second goal.
Daniel Amartey (CB) – 5/10 – Got through the game without doing anything calamitous – which does not always happen.
Caglar Soyuncu (CB) – 6/10 – Mercilessly criticised of late but wasn’t too bad here after a shaky start. Looked assured in possession and made a few important interventions.
Luke Thomas (LB) – 5/10 – Not his best game. Rather coasted through without moving up through the gears.
Youri Tielemans (CM) – 7/10 – A bit slow sensing the danger for Neves‘ goal but made up for it with a sublime goal-creating pass. Always involved but his finishing was poor.
Wilfred Ndidi (CM) – 4/10 – Far from convincing for Wolves‘ opener. Committed a few sloppy fouls too.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (CM) – 4/10 – Lots of industry but struggled to make inroads through the Wolves‘ midfield. Crossing was abject.
Marc Albrighton (RW) – 6/10 – From left-back on Thursday to right wing on Sunday. Such a useful member of the squad and set up the goal.
Patson Daka (ST) – 3/10 – Very quiet first half – he only touched the ball eight times. Barely improved before being subbed.
Ademola Lookman (LW) – 7/10 – Moved to the left in the absence of the injured Harvey Barnes and fared well. Timed his run expertly for the goal and always looked dangerous.
James Maddison (AM) – 5/10 – Came on and missed a decent opportunity.
Kelechi Iheanacho (ST) – 5/10 – Nothing to report.
