Sebastian Giovinco training with Toronto FC

Former Toronto FC star Sebastian Giovinco has been back training with the club during their January training camp in California.

The Italian forward – who turned 35 earlier this week – has been without a club since leaving Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal FC in August. Since then, he’s rejected multiple offers in hope of securing a return to Toronto – although Giovinco did stress he couldn’t wait forever.

“I say no (to a) couple, maybe more than a couple, teams because I want to come back here to play here for TFC,” Giovinco said in December (via Waking The Red). “But now we are already four months. I think it’s enough to wait and to say no to the teams. We have to start to talk if we want to talk; if not, I have to figure out other options.”

News of Giovinco’s desire to return was understandably met with joy among TFC supporters. During his previous spell with the club, the Italian hit 83 goals and 51 assists in 142 appearances, winning MLS Cup, Supporters‘ Shield, and Canadian Championship titles. On an individual level, he was named MVP in 2015 when he won the Golden Boot, and was included in the MLS Best XI on three separate occasions.

TFC – now under the management of Bob Bradley – have been in California since January 18 and on Thursday, finally released the list of players taking part in the training camp, including Giovinco.

Fellow Italian Lorenzo Insigne will join Toronto FC following the expiration of his current Napoli contract in the summer, while Andrea Belotti and Domenico Criscito continue to be linked with the Canadian club.
