England continue their 2023 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign this month, starting with the visit of Austria.

The Lionesses have breezed through qualifying so far under new boss Sarina Wiegman, scoring 32 goals without reply across their opening four matches – including 10-0 victories over Luxembourg and Latvia and an 8-0 thrashing of North Macedonia.

Austria, who surprisingly made it to the semi-finals at Euro 2017, are not far behind in the group but lost their perfect record with a 2-2 draw against Northern Ireland last time out.

This is everything you need to know about the game…

Millie Bright will captain England in the absence of Steph Houghton, Lucy Bronze and Leah Williamson – the latter has worn the armband in every international under Wiegman.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Hannah Hampton is pushing for a senior England debut this month, as is Manchester United captain Katie Zelem, and both will hope to get on the pitch.

Arsenal’s Jordan Nobbs is also back in the squad, while Ella Toone has been a favourite starter of the new boss in all four qualifiers so far this season.

Wiegman has experimented with different tactical systems since taking over in September, using 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 formations during last month’s qualifiers. Austria are probably the next best team in this qualifying group, so that could influence team selection in a different way to facing much weaker sides like Latvia or Luxembourg, for example.

England have won all six games they have played against Austria this century, scoring 21 goals across those meetings and conceding only once.

The most recent of those came in 2017 and 2018, a pair of friendlies that the Lionesses won 3-0 each time. Ellen White, Lucy Bronze and Izzy Christiansen got the goals in the former in Milton Keynes, while Chioma Ubogagu, Georgia Stanway and Rachel Daly netted away in the latter.

England should be on course for another big victory here. It won’t be a repeat of the 10-0 score-line against Latvia last time out, but the Lionesses have shown ruthlessness under Wiegman and have masses of quality that should still make this one comfortable.

Controlling every aspect of the game and keeping a clean sheet is something to aim for.

Prediction: England 4-0 Austria
