Losing Ben Chilwell to a knee injury is a big blow to Chelsea as he had been one of the team’s best performers since winning his place back from Marcos Alonso.

Romelu Lukaku has been in training this week but is unlikely to start after missing six weeks, and the same goes for Kai Havertz, who was spotted back on the grass on Friday.

N’Golo Kante is a major doubt after tweaking his knee in midweek, while Mateo Kovacic is still out.

Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane and Mason Greenwood are still missing for United. Edinson Cavani remains a major doubt because of lingering fitness trouble, while Fred (ankle) and Luke Shaw (head) will be assessed again before a decision is made.

Harry Maguire is suspended following his red card last weekend, which is likely to mean that Eric Bailly partners Victor Lindelof in the centre of defence.

Even before Roman Abramovich arrived in English football, Chelsea vs Manchester United has been a rivalry that has defined the Premier League era. These two sides first met in the Second Division back in 1905 and have had some great battles in the last 30 years alone.

Purely in the Premier League, it is pretty even. As two of the founder members, there have been 58 games since 1992, with Chelsea just edging it with 18 wins to United’s 17, and 23 draws.

Both contests last season actually finished 0-0, although that score-line has been relatively rare.

Even though Chelsea are not at full strength, they are still the Premier League leaders going into this one. United, meanwhile, will not be fundamentally different until interim boss Rangnick takes control of the squad, which will be after this match.

Midweek against Villarreal showed that Michael Carrick has at least got some response from the players following last weekend’s clash with Watford. Yet with Chelsea fresh off a confidence boosting thrashing of Juventus, they should still have too much here.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Man Utd
