Kylian Mbappe’s potential ‚limited‘ by Ligue 1 as reports in France tip PSG star for move away
Reports in France have tipped Kylian Mbappe to use his contract situation to leverage a summer move away from PSG, claiming that Ligue 1 is ‚limiting his potential.‘
Liverpool and Real Madrid have been frequently linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who may be available in June unless he extends his contract beyond 2022.
His recent form has dipped below the levels expected, which seems strange to say considering he has netted 16 goals in 23 appearances this season, but his opener against Montpellier at the weekend was his first of 2021.
A report from ESPN explains his recent dip, noting he is shooting less often and losing the ball far more frequently than last season. It speculates that his concerning drop-off is down to his contract situation weighing on his mind, and that idea is fed into by French outlet Le Parisien.
They take things one step further, though, insinuating that Mbappe has outgrown Ligue 1, where his talents are not suitably challenged. They say French football is ‚limiting his potential‘ and that a move to another of Europe’s major leagues may be the only way for him to take things to the next level – though there is no news on renewed interest from Madrid or Merseyside.
Speaking on his future after netting twice against Montpellier, Mbappe said: „We are in discussions with the club to try to find a suitable project. If I sign, it would have to be a long-term commitment to Paris Saint-Germain.
„I am very happy here. I have always been very happy. The supporters and the club have always helped me and for that alone I will always be grateful.
„But I want to think about what I want to do in the coming years, where I want to be. That’s what I am reflecting on.“
