Barcelona lead the race for Gianluigi Donnarumma
Since it was confirmed by AC Milan’s Technical Director Paolo Maldini that Gianluigi Donnarumma will be leaving the club this summer, speculation has been rife around the goalkeeper’s future.
The 22-year-old’s contract with the Rossoneri is due to expire on June 30 and as you’d expect he’s already being linked with some of the continent’s biggest clubs.
Donnarumma was in outstanding form for AC Milan last season, keeping 14 clean sheets in his 37 Serie A appearances. He played a vital role in the club qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since the 2013/14 season and enhanced his already excellent reputation further.
While there will be a number of clubs eyeing a move for Italy’s number one goalkeeper, it’s understood that Barcelona is currently his most likely destination. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the strong relationship between the player’s agent Mino Raiola and the Barca president Joan Laporta could be key in negotiations.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains under contract with La Blaugrana until 2025 but according to the report, Barcelona will pursue a deal for Donnarumma regardless of what the future holds for the German.
The La Liga giants‘ financial issues have been well documented in recent months but it seems the club could still enjoy a productive transfer window this summer, particularly if they can add Donnarumma on a free along with Georginio Wijnaldum, Sergio Aguero and possibly Memphis Depay.
Juventus have also been credited with an interest in the 6ft 4in stopper but with Massimiliano Allegri said to be on his way back to Turin to take over from Andrea Pirlo, it’s unlikely he’ll see replacing Wojciech Szczesny, whom he rates highly.
Donnarumma’s future may not be resolved ahead of the summer’s European Championships and so fans of the Azzurri will be hoping the goalkeeper is not distracted when representing his country in the tournament.
