Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has revealed Harry Kane is optimistic he can return to full fitness in a couple of weeks.

The England striker was substituted at half time during Spurs‘ recent defeat to Liverpool, having injured both ankles. Speaking after the loss at relegation-threatened Brighton on Sunday, the Portuguese coach provided an update on his player’s fitness.

Mourinho said, as quoted by the club’s website: “The news is pretty good news. After Liverpool, [we had] no idea. Then the next day, we were thinking about three weeks, something like that.

„I don’t want to be super-optimistic, but Harry is optimistic, he has the experience of some injuries in his ankles and in Harry’s mind, it’s a couple of weeks, so let’s see if he’s right.”

It seems that the Spurs boss has taken confidence from the 27-year-old’s own gut feeling about how long he’ll be absent for based on his previous experiences, despite the initial estimate thought to be around three weeks.

The Lilywhites were without Kane for their defeat at Brighton and had just half the attempts at goal Graham Potter’s side managed – highlighting the importance not just of the forward’s direct goal threat but also in terms of his creativity.

As a result of this latest injury, the Tottenham man looks likely to miss the upcoming fixtures versus Chelsea, West Brom, Everton and Manchester City.

Spurs currently find themselves six points off the Champions League qualification spots but have played a game fewer than most of the sides around them. Although their position is far from irretrievable, supporters will be delighted to learn their talismanic striker’s injury might not be as serious as first feared.
