Report: Man Utd make Erik ten Hag decision after Tottenham mauling
Erik ten Hag is expected to remain in charge of Manchester United for the time being, despite facing calls for the sack following their 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Dutchman’s position has yet again come under fire after a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign. Defeats to Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion, as well as a disappointing draw with Eredivisie side FC Twente in the UEFA Europa League, have raised questions over Ten Hag’s ability to carry the team forward after he managed to keep his job at the end of the club’s worst ever Premier League campaign last season.
Sunday’s poor performance against Tottenham seemed to be another nail in the coffin for Ten Hag, with United now having taken just seven points from their opening six Premier League games.
But despite mounting calls for his exit, United are in no rush to part ways with him at this stage, according to The Times.
He’s expected to remain at the helm for upcoming clashes with Porto and Aston Villa – but the club will hope to see an improvement on recent results and performances.
The report goes on to reveal that if United do change their minds and decide to let go of Ten Hag, they may look to promote Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was brought in as an assistant coach this summer.
Former striker Van Nistelrooy boasts previous first team management experience, with the Dutchman enjoying spells in charge of PSV Eindhoven’s senior team and numerous youth teams before moving back to Old Trafford in July to assist Ten Hag.
Other reports claim United could turn to Thomas Tuchel – who was among the potential candidates to replace Ten Hag over the summer – Inter’s Simone Inzaghi or former England boss Gareth Southgate if they look externally for a successor.
