‚I constantly told you!‘ – Arne Slot bites back at reporters over Liverpool’s transfers
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot felt vindicated by the quality of his playing squad following their 5-1 demolition of West Ham United.
The Reds progressed to round four of the Carabao Cup with a sizeable win at home to the Hammers on Wednesday evening, during which their only immediate summer signing, Federico Chiesa, made his first start. Mohamed Salah scored for the hosts, while Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo grabbed braces.
Slot arrived at Anfield this summer as the successor to the legendary Jurgen Klopp, and he faced constant questions in his first press conferences over the club’s lack of transfer activity.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool beat West Ham, Slot took the opportunity to pay tribute to a largely unchanged squad from last season.
„For two months you only asked me about new players and I constantly told you guys how many quality players we already had!“ Slot said.
„That is what we showed in the last weeks and today again, that we have many quality players.
„What pleases me most is that even if a lot of new players come in [to the starting lineup], they don’t come in and try to have a good individual performances. They try to work really hard for the team because there was a lot of desire not to concede.
„And as a result of that, we had some good individual performances as well.“
In addition to bringing in Chiesa from Juventus, Liverpool also struck a deal with Valencia to sign Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in 2025.
Liverpool heavily pursued Euro 2024 winner Martin Zubimendi, but he decided to stay at boyhood club Real Sociedad instead. 90min understands they could reignite their interest in the midfielder should he signal a willingness to leave San Sebastian.
