Brentford vs Southampton: Preview, predictions and lineups
Brentford welcome Southampton to the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League.
The Bees made the perfect start to the 2024/25 season when they beat fellow Londoners Crystal Palace 2-1 on home soil but were unable to upset the odds on their trip to Anfield last weekend. They fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool and will be keen to bounce back against newly-promoted Southampton this weekend.
Southampton’s return to the Premier League has proven frustrating to date. The Saints spurned plenty of golden opportunities in a 1-0 defeat to ten-man Newcastle United on the opening weekend and lost to Nottingham Forest by the same scoreline at St Mary’s Stadium last Saturday. With points so precious in their bid to beat the drop, the south coast side will be desperate to get on the board this weekend.
Here is 90min’s guide to Brentford vs Southampton.

Brentford still find themselves without four first-team players, with £30m summer signing Igor Thiago unlikely to return until the end of the calendar year. Full-backs Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry are still missing, while Joshua Dasilva remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury.
Recent recruit Sepp van den Berg could make his debut for the Bees this weekend and his former Liverpool teammate Fabio Carvalho might make a first start after two cameos from the bench.
Brentford predicted lineup vs Southampton (4-2-3-1): Flekken; Roerslev, Collins, Van den Berg, Ajer; Norgaard, Jensen; Mbeumo, Carvalho, Schade; Wissa.
Southampton are still missing Gavin Bazunu and Juan Larios but Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ross Stewart are closing in on returns, while Adam Lallana featured in the 5-3 Carabao Cup victory at Cardiff City.
Summer signings Cameron Archer, Mateus Fernandes and Charlie Taylor all managed minutes from the bench against Nottingham Forest, while Yukinari Sugawara and Ben Brereton Diaz appear to have nailed down starting spots. Lesley Ugochukwu could make a first league start for the club after playing in Wales.
Southampton predicted lineup vs Brentford (3-5-2): McCarthy; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Stephens; Sugawara, Smallbone, Downes, Aribo, Walker-Peters; Armstrong, Brereton Diaz.
Defensively, Brentford still look short, especially given injuries to full-backs. Southampton will fancy their chances of scoring their first Premier League goal of the season, especially after bagging five midweek, but whether they are able to turn chances into goals remains to be seen.
Brentford have the superior options in attack and midfield, with the deadly duo of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa showing their quality on matchday one against Palace. They should punish the newly-promoted Saints this weekend.
