Liverpool ‚make contact‘ with Juventus over Federico Chiesa deal

Business

Liverpool have made a move for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa as they seek to complete their business late in the summer transfer window.

The Reds are yet to make a signing under Arne Slot but are reportedly closing in on Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is expected to return to Spain on loan while Alisson occupies the place between the sticks at Anfield.

However, a new target has now emerged in the form of Chiesa. Fabrizio Romano has revealed the Merseyside club have made contact over a potential deal in the final week of the window, with the Italy international on the lookout for a new club having been told he has no future at Juve by incoming manager Thiago Motta.

The Turin giants are keen to engineer an exit for the Euro 2020 winner, who is said to be interested in playing Premier League football.

Chiesa scored nine Serie A goals last season – the best haul of his Juve career – as he began to return to the levels of form he showed when he first broke onto the scene. The 26-year-old had previously suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury which stunted his development.

Liverpool are not the only side interested in the 51-time Azzurri international, however. The former Fiorentina star has been lined up by Barcelona as a possible alternative to Nico Williams, who looks set to remain at Athletic Club despite an intense transfer pursuit from the Catalan side.

Chiesa is predominantly a left winger, the position Luis Diaz starred in during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday afternoon. Arne Slot also has Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota who are comfortable playing in that role.

Juve began their first Serie A campaign under Motta with a 3-0 victory over Cesc Fabregas‘ Como and are in action on Monday night when they visit Hellas Verona.
