Thomas Tuchel springs surprise as he rings changes for second Chelsea lineup
After admitting his first Chelsea lineup was picked for experience, manager Thomas Tuchel has sprung some surprises with his second XI to face Burnley.
Tuchel left out youngsters like Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Reece James for his first game, the 0-0 draw with Wolves, but he admitted it was the most ‚unfair‘ lineup he will ever pick as he had had just one day with his new team before the game.
The boss has since had more time to work with his team, and his next lineup is here.
Tuchel’s sticking to his back three, with Cesar Azpilcueta and Antonio Rudiger featuring alongside Thiago Silva, but the eyebrows start to be raised when we get to the boss‘ wing-backs.
It’s winger Callum Hudson-Odoi who gets the nod again on the right side, with Reece James still on the bench, but on the left…it’s Marcos Alonso.
We haven’t seen Alonso since the infamous 3-3 draw with West Bromwich Albion in September, in which Alonso made two crucial mistakes, was hauled off at half-time and clashed with Lampard over his attempt to leave the stadium.
It’s been Ben Chilwell who has dominated the starting lineup ever since, but Tuchel’s arrival has given Alonso a new lease of life, and if most Chelsea fans are being honest, the idea of seeing him back as a wing-back is quite exciting. Prime Roberto Carlos.
Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic keep their spots in midfield after helping Chelsea to a record 820 passes last time out, but Mount earns his first start under Tuchel after impressing in his cameo appearance against Wolves.
In attack, Abraham is joined by Timo Werner, and it looks like they could be a strike partnership, with Mount in behind in a 3-4-1-2.
It’s definitely an interesting lineup, and with the likes of James, Kai Havertz and Chilwell on the bench (and Billy Gilmour nowhere to be seen), but fans will soon be on board if Tuchel can get the goals flowing again.
Hakim Ziyech has also been left out of the squad altogether, but it remains to be seen whether the Moroccan has picked up a knock.
