Milan vs Real Madrid: Preview, predictions and lineups

Business

Real Madrid finally get their pre-season underway when they face Milan in Chicago.

Madrid are regular visitors to the United States and overcame Milan 3-2 in a thrilling Californian friendly last summer. However, there’s set to be a considerable lack of star power in their upcoming encounter with a long list of players absent from the touring squad.

While they’re yet to take to the field, the Champions League and La Liga holders have enjoyed a busy summer having secured the free agent signing of Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman, however, will not be making his first Madrid appearance in the US.

Carlo Ancelotti will get a good look at the club’s academy starlets over the next week, with upcoming counterpart Paulo Fonseca also overseeing a crucial squad assessment. Fonseca has taken on the Milan job after Stefano Pioli’s exit and the Rossoneri started their tour with a 3-2 victory over Manchester City in New York.

Here’s 90min’s guide to Real Madrid’s pre-season friendly against Milan.

Fonseca is still getting to know his squad at the start of his managerial tenure, with the Portuguese boss so far using the Rossoneri’s brightest academy stars alongside his experienced pros.

Milan are without the likes of Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao, while new arrival Alvaro Morata hasn’t travelled out to the States either. Fellow newbie Alex Jimenez could earn minutes in Chicago, though.

Lorenzo Colombo should continue up top after scoring a brace in Milan’s 3-2 victory over Man City last time out.

Milan predicted lineup vs Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Sportiello; Calabria, Gabbia, Tomori, Terracciano; Pobega, Bennacer; Chukwueze, Loftus-Cheek, Pulisic; Colombo.

Madrid’s Brazilian contingent are expected to travel out late to the States off the back of their Copa America commitments, so Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Eder Militao aren’t expected to feature.

However, teenage star Endrick has joined up with his new teammates and is in contention to start in Chicago.

Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham are among the superstars not a part of the touring squad. David Alaba is still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

Real Madrid predicted lineup vs Milan (4-3-3): Courtois; Vazquez, Vallejo, Rudiger, Garcia; Ceballos, Paz, Guler; Diaz, Endrick, Latasa.

Let’s hope these two can combine to produce the fireworks of last summer in Chicago. While there’s an absence of superstars, Endrick, Arda Guler and Nico Paz are among the Madrid players keen to make an impression.

This is the La Liga giants‘ first outing of the summer, so Milan should benefit from having played twice already in pre-season. The Rossoneri secured an impressive victory over Man City last time out, with Fonseca’s ideals quickly manifesting.

The Italian team should have success against an inexperienced Madrid outfit, but it’s hard to envisage either side keeping the score down. There should be goals at both ends, with the inconsequential result going either way.

Prediction: Milan 3-3 Real Madrid
