Liverpool vs Arsenal: Preview, predictions and lineups

Business

There’s another all-Premier League affair to enjoy out in the United States as Liverpool and Arsenal collide in Philadelphia.

Arne Slot enjoyed an unbeaten start to his first summer as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, with his youthful Liverpool outfit overcoming Real Betis 1-0 thanks to a Dominik Szoboszlai strike. The Dutchman utilised 23 players in the Reds‘ first friendly of their pre-season tour and would have been particularly enamoured of the performance of young midfielder Trey Nyoni.

A tougher test is on the horizon for Slot’s side in the form of Mikel Arteta’s seasoned Arsenal. The Gunners opened up their tour of the US with a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth before they downed Manchester United 2-1 in Inglewood.

Arteta’s squad has been bolstered by the returns of several senior stars midway through their tour and the 2024/25 Premier League title hopefuls will return home after Wednesday evening’s encounter.

Here is 90min’s guide to Liverpool’s friendly clash with Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The Reds had 14 players on international duty this summer, the majority of whom won’t be in action out in the States.

Curtis Jones sustained an injury in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Real Betis and is unlikely to feature against Arsenal. However, Slot can call upon Dominik Szoboszlai in the middle of the park.

The new manager is without a long list of senior defenders, so a youthful backline is expected in Philadelphia.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Bradley, Quansah, Van den Berg, Tsimikas; Endo, Morton; Salah, Szoboszlai, Elliott; Jota.

Arsenal were bolstered by the arrivals of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes and Kai Havertz ahead of their friendly with United. The trio are all in contention to earn their first starts of the summer.

New signing Riccardo Calafiori has teamed up with his teammates in the States and is expected to get some minutes in Philadelphia. Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber and Ben White are among Arteta’s senior stars poised for starts against the Reds.

Exciting teenager Ethan Nwaneri has impressed in pre-season and could retain his place in midfield.

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-3-3): Hein; White, Timber, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Partey, Odegaard, Nwaneri; Jesus, Havertz, Martinelli.

It was a bright enough start against Betis, but this is a much bigger test for a Liverpool side without so many critical figures.

The Reds offered control against the La Liga outfit, but their ability to press and retain possession in the build-up phase will be put to the test by this excellent Arsenal team. Arteta could utilise a strong starting XI in Philadelphia and potentially blow away an inexperienced backline.

It’ll be interesting to see how Slot’s side cope, but the Gunners should be expected to win this pre-season encounter.

Prediction: Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal
