The Chelsea lineup that should start against Burnley
Thomas Tuchel’s opening game in charge of Chelsea offered plenty of positives, but there was a sense of deja vu as the Blues yet again struggled to break the deadlock against a solid Wolves side.
Sunday’s clash with Burnley may look like a great opportunity for the German boss to notch his first win at the helm of the west London club, but Sean Dyche’s man arrive in fine form having won three on the bounce including scoring six in their last two games.
Let’s take a look at the Chelsea side that Tuchel should field for their clash with the Clarets, as they look to record just their third win in their last ten Premier League outings.
Edouard Mendy (GK) – If his place as the Chelsea number one wasn’t already cemented then Kepa Arrizabalaga’s error against Luton in the FA Cup certainly secured it. Unlikely to be the long-term solution to their goalkeeping issues but the best option at the club for now.
Cesar Azpilicueta (RB) – Given the nod ahead of Reece James in Tuchel’s first game in charge perhaps suggesting the German is keen to add some more experience to the backline.
Antonio Rudiger (CB) – Having been frozen out by former boss Frank Lampard he seemed to work his way back into his plans towards the end of his tenure, and Tuchel will no doubt recognise his quality.
Thiago Silva (CB) – Played the full 90 minutes in 14 of Chelsea’s last 17 Premier League outings. Looks to be the number one centre-back at the club and will be instrumental in the club’s season.
Ben Chilwell (LB) – With three left-backs on the books at Stamford Bridge there’s been talk that one will definitely be leaving this window, though it certainly won’t be Ben Chilwell – undoubtedly the first choice left-back at the club.
Jorginho (CM) – With N’Golo Kante back in training the Italian’s time in the first team could be set to come to an end, but he’s likely to be given one last chance to impress as Kante looks to regain match sharpness.
Mason Mount (CM) – It remains to be seen whether his omission from Tuchel’s first starting XI was to offer him a rest or whether he was just dropped. However, after his brief cameo in midweek he certainly showed enough to warrant being given his chance from the off.
Mateo Kovacic (CM) – The Croatian’s undoubted quality can be a huge asset to Chelsea, but his inability to showcase said quality on a consistent basis means he’s yet to cement his place in the starting XI. A new boss represents a fresh start and he’ll be hoping to impress.
Callum Hudson-Odoi (RW) – Looked lively at times against Wolves and Tuchel has clearly seen something he likes in the previously out-of-favour youngster.
Tammy Abraham (ST) – With Olivier Giroud failing to really stake a claim to be Tuchel’s number one striker against Wolves, Tammy Abraham is likely to be given his opportunity.
Christian Pulisic (LW) – The American enjoyed a fine spell under Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and is expected to become a key part of the German’s plans. If he can produce the football we know he’s capable of then the Blues will be back to winning ways in no time.
