Everton 0-2 Newcastle: Player ratings as Callum Wilson brace hands Magpies huge win
Newcastle stopped a rot of 11 games without a win as two Callum Wilson goals secured all three points against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.
The first half was played at a good tempo but neither side looked particularly menacing in front of goal, with Jordan Pickford’s acrobatic save from Wilson’s header the only real save of note made by either goalkeeper.
Despite their wretched recent form, Newcastle looked the brighter of the two sides as the game progressed and they took the lead with just 15 minutes to play, after Wilson powered home a superb header from Jonjo Shelvey’s corner.
With Everton pushing for an equaliser late on, Wilson was handed a glorious opportunity to secure the win as he was played through on goal – a chance he never looked like passing on.
That’s the match highlights sorted, now to those Everton and Newcastle player ratings.
Jordan Pickford (GK) – 7/10 – Superb reaction save in the first half prevented Wilson from handing Newcastle the lead. Showed a good command of his area and bounced back following his wretched Leicester display. Little he could do about both Wilson goals.
Seamus Coleman (RB) – 6/10 – Did a good job of stifling any threat offered by Ryan Fraser but struggled to offer much going forward.
Yerry Mina (CB) – 5/10 – Couldn’t contain Wilson and was constantly dragged into the wide areas by the rapid frontman – somewhere it was clear he didn’t want to be.
Michael Keane (CB) – 6/10 – Looked solid all afternoon and showed good distribution to launch his side’s attacks.
Lucas Digne (LB) – 5/10 – Looked to be lacking match sharpness and, as such, couldn’t impact the game in the opposition’s final third as he usually would.
Abdoulaye Doucoure (CM) – 6/10 – Combative and energetic throughout and did a good job of distributing to Everton’s creative players, it’s just a shame they did little with the ball once in possession.
Gylfi Sigurdsson (CM) – 4/10 – Another nothing performance from the £45m man. Looks a shadow of the player he was at Swansea, just wandered around the midfield doing very little aside from committing fouls.
James Rodriguez (CM) – 5/10 – Given something of a free role in the midfield to try and find space and cause Newcastle problems. Clearly pinpointed as the Everton danger man by the visitors and was subjected to some rough treatment – subsequently struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Alex Iwobi (RW) – 3/10 – If they hadn’t spent so much money on him then you can bet he’d be nowhere near the Everton starting XI. Tough to analyse a performance in which you struggled to realise he was playing.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ST) – 4/10 – Completely swallowed up by the Newcastle back three. With James Rodriguez unable to get on the ball and the Everton full-backs struggling to advance up the field the supply line to him was completely cut off. Not his fault but an anonymous display.
Richarlison (LW) – 5/10 – The most lively of the Everton front three but a frustrating afternoon on the whole. Continued to demand the ball but it just wasn’t his day.
Andre Gomes (CM) – 5/10
Karl Darlow (GK) – 7/10 – Looked unorthodox at times but did a really good job of keeping his side in the game. Would have expected a much busier afternoon but his defence were superb.
Fabian Schar (CB) – 8/10 – Threw his body at absolutely everything. Positional sense was brilliant all afternoon and helped lay the foundations of a fine away performance.
Isaac Hayden (CB) – 7/10 – Tasked with slotting into the middle of a back three as well as stepping into midfield when the chance presented itself. Helped open up the game and break through the Everton press.
Jamaal Lascelles (CB) – 7/10 – Did a really good job of marshalling Dominic Calvert-Lewin and wasn’t afraid to follow the frontman into the wide areas. Withdrawn after suffering an injury early in the second half.
Javier Manquillo (RWB) – 7/10 – Did a very good job of pushing Lucas Digne back so the Frenchman couldn’t cause problems to the Newcastle backline. Has come in for a lot of criticism since moving to Tyneside but this was one of his better performances.
Jonjo Shelvey (CM) – 6/10 – Looked like he’d forgotten he wasn’t wearing a Liverpool shirt at times as he flung himself into challenges – was subsequently booked in the first half and forced to settle down. Recycled possession well and constantly looked to free Wilson when possible.
Jeff Hendrick (CM) – 6/10 – A busy afternoon for the Irishman who never stopped running and was constantly looking to break up play. Couldn’t provide any real quality when in a position of promise but put in a solid shift for the team.
Jamal Lewis (LWB) – 7/10 – Similarly to his full-back partner on the opposite flank, did a great job of preventing Seamus Coleman from marauding down the Everton left and was a threat going forward.
Miguel Almiron (RW) – 8/10 – Did a brilliant job of dropping into midfield and helping out defensively as well as supporting the attack when the visitors were in possession.
Callum Wilson (ST) – 8/10 – Came within inches of handing his side the lead in the first half, only to be denied by the acrobatic Pickford. Held the ball up well and worked the channels brilliantly to relieve the Everton pressure. Produced two great finishes to hand his side the win.
Ryan Fraser (LW) – 5/10 – A little secluded out on the Newcastle left and found himself shackled by the impressive Coleman whenever he had chance to run at the Everton defence.
Ciaran Clark (CB) – 6/10
Allan Saint-Maximin (LW) – 7/10
