Mauricio Pochettino drops Sergio Ramos hint and reveals why he took PSG job
PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino has refused to rule out a move for Sergio Ramos, hinting that club’s winning mentality would appeal to the Real Madrid defender.
Ramos has entered the final six months of his deal at the Bernabeu and is now free to enter talks with other clubs regarding a free transfer in the summer of 2021.
Real and the World Cup winner have been locked in negotiations about extending his stay for months, but with the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic taking their toll on the La Liga champions, they are not currently able to meet Ramos‘ salary expectations.
With doubts over Ramos‚ Real future, PSG have been linked with a move for the defender – and Pochettino refused to play down the speculation.
“PSG’s strategy has been the same for years, like when we signed Ronaldinho,” Pochettino told Marca when asked about the possibility of signing Ramos.
“We see the market opportunities and bring in those who can improve on what we have. We’ll see in the coming months. Here, Ramos would find a great club with the obsession of always winning. PSG are one of the greats in the world.”
January is Pochettino’s first transfer window at PSG after taking the reins at the turn of the year. The former Spurs boss had been out of the game for 13 months, but had been linked with both the Real and Barcelona jobs during his hiatus.
„It’s not like that,” Pochettino replied when asked whether he’d previously turned down Real and Barcelona. “There was a lot of talk. We greatly respect the teams that have been interested in our staff. It was not like that and and of course we’ve had contact with other clubs, but it was from PSG that we received the offer with the most affection. This is the ideal project.“
