Manchester City to make no approach for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba

Manchester City will not be joining the race to sign Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.

The Austrian star will be a free agent this summer with his contract with the European champions set to expire. Die Roten had expressed an interest in extending the 28-year-old’s deal at the club, however, with talks reaching a standstill last November they promptly withdrew their offer.

With less than six months remaining on his current deal, Alaba is free to talk to potential future employers, and La Liga giants Real Madrid are understood to be in the driving seat in the race to secure his services.

Despite Los Blancos looking set to confirm the capture of the full-back, Alaba’s father has confirmed nothing has been agreed as of yet, though it seems Manchester City have no intentions of luring him to the Premier League.

MEN report that Pep Guardiola is not interested in making a move for the versatile defender – whether that be in the January transfer window or when he becomes a free agent in the summer.

City’s left-back problems have been well documented over the past few seasons, with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo and Benjamin Mendy all afforded their chance on the left-hand side of defence in recent months.

The chance to bring in a world class defender – who Guardiola has previously worked with during his time at Bayern Munich – on a free transfer seemed too good an opportunity to miss, but City don’t appear to be interested in following up their initial interest.

The decision to pass on the chance to sign Alaba may be driven by City’s need to bolster other areas of the squad, with attacking reinforcements looking necessary.

Sergio Aguero is widely expected to leave the club this summer, and with Gabriel Jesus not developing as first hoped, Guardiola has been forced to experiment with Kevin De Bruyne and Ferran Torres taking turns as makeshift forwards.
