Borussia Dortmund vs PSG: Preview, predictions and lineups

Borussia Dortmund welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Signal Iduna Park for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

Both teams escaped chaotic quarter-final ties to reach the last four, with Dortmund set to compete in their first Champions League semi-final since they faced Bayern Munich in an all-German final 11 years ago.

BVB overcame Atletico Madrid 5-4 on aggregate to progress having been 4-3 down with 20 minutes of the tie remaining. PSG were also forced to come from behind in their quarter-final, but a Barcelona collapse saw them win 4-1 in Catalonia and thus progress as 6-4 aggregate victors.

Luis Enrique’s side were confirmed as Ligue 1 champions over the weekend, and they’ll be carrying a swagger into Wednesday’s first leg against a Dortmund side that were battered 4-1 by RB Leipzig on Saturday. Dortmund might have to win this season’s competition to ensure they earn Champions League qualification for 2024/25.

This will be the third time these two sides have faced off this term as they were paired together in Group F to start the campaign. PSG comfortably won on home soil before drawing in Dortmund to ensure they progressed into the knockouts.

Here’s 90min’s preview of Wednesday night’s Champions League semi-final first leg.

Dortmund will be without long-term absentee Ramy Bensebaini due to a knee injury, while Sebastien Haller has also been ruled out with an ankle issue.

Mats Hummels is said to be carrying a knock, but he’s expected to be fit for Wednesday’s game. Donyell Malen has been struggling with a thigh injury and is unlikely to start, but the Dutchman could make Edin Terzic’s matchday squad.

Dortmund predicted lineup vs PSG (4-2-3-1): Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen; Can, Sabitzer; Sancho, Brandt, Adeyemi; Fullkrug.

Enrique has had success with Bradley Barcola deployed wide left with Kylian Mbappe up top, and we should see that dynamic again in Dortmund with the Spaniard potentially naming an unchanged side from the second leg in Barcelona.

In terms of injuries, PSG have no fresh concerns but they will be without Presnel Kimpembe, Sergio Rico, and Layvin Kurzawa.

PSG predicted lineup vs Dortmund (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Hernandez, Mendes; Vitinha, Fabian, Zaire-Emery; Dembele, Mbappe, Barcola.

We enjoyed a preview of this semi-final during the group stages, with PSG unfortunate not to win in Dortmund despite falling behind.

Enrique’s side are beginning to shake off PSG’s inherent Champions League vulnerability given that they’ve won twice on the road during the knockouts, but this is a huge test of their credentials in what will be a raucous Signal Iduna Park.

BVB’s fervent home crowd got them over the line in the quarters, and while they’re considerably inferior to their opponents, there’s no doubt this tie will be competitive. The hosts have to secure a result on Wednesday night, and PSG will surrender chances in transition, but Enrique’s side are well-built for success on the road in the first leg.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 1-2 PSG
