Jose Mourinho gives update on Harry Kane after double ankle injury

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has predicted that star striker Harry Kane could be ruled out for ‘a few weeks’ after suffering injuries to both ankles during Thursday night’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.

Spurs await tests to learn the full extent of the damage, the first issue caused on the receiving end of a tackle from Liverpool’s Thiago Alcantara, but Kane has a history of ankle ligament problems that have previously sidelined him for weeks at a time on multiple occasions.

The England captain had two spells out of action in 2018/19, as well as a month-long absence in 2017/18 and two others of least a month during the 2016/17 campaign.

To lose Kane again to a similar problem would be a huge blow for Spurs as he has scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in the Premier League alone this season. Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has scored more, while he leads the league in the assist charts.

“Two ankles, the first was a bad tackle, it was Thiago, the second one I didn’t know,” Mourinho told BBC Radio 5 Live following the 3-1 defeat.

“But two injuries in both ankles, the second one was worse than the first one. [He could be out] a few weeks, I don’t know. There are some players you can’t replace.”

Mourinho, who was replaced at half-time by Erik Lamela, said it was telling that a player of Kane’s importance had to be withdrawn when Spurs were trailing.

“For Harry to leave a game when the team is losing is not a nothing injury. There are some players you can’t replace. When it happens it happens, but I believe we have to fight against it, we cannot do anything else,” the Spurs boss explained in further comments published by BBC Sport.
