What were you doing when you were eight years old?

Probably watching Tracey Beaker, idolising Dick and Dom and dreaming of one day being old enough to take your cycling proficiency test.

Well, one eight-year-old is making headlines in Brazil by smashing a record previously held by footballing icons Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Brazilian news outlet Diario Ole report that Kauan Basile has signed a contract with Nike – becoming the youngest person in history to do so.

The Santos youth team member surpassed the record previously held by Real Madrid’s Rodrygo – a fellow Brazilian and graduate from the Santos youth system – who had signed a deal with Nike at the age of 11.

Prior to Rodrygo, compatriot Neymar (another Santos alumni) had held the record, having signed with Nike aged 13. Neymar’s former Barcelona teammate Messi had been another previous holder of the record after signing with the American sportswear giant at the age of 15 – although he is of course now better known for his relationship with adidas.

It’s pretty good company to be in, with both Messi and Neymar doing alright for themselves, winning a combined 38 major trophies during their esteemed club careers.

Kauan has signed a three-year contract with Nike with the option of a further two years – taking him to the grand old age of 13.

Diario Ole describe him as ‚one of the pearls of the Peixe Under-9 futsal team‘, adding that he has already enjoyed a decorated youth career, scooping team and individual honours galore – including the player of the tournament at the 2019 Sao Paulo futsal championship.

„A very special day for me and my family, I signed my first contract with @nikefootball at the age of eight, what an immense happiness, I just have to thank God for everything he has been doing in my life, thank you,“ Kauan wrote on Instagram.
