Anthony Hudson to remain in charge of USMNT; Jesse Marsch ties strengthen

United States men’s national team interim manager Anthony Hudson will lead the American side through Nations League action before committing to another project, sources close to 90min confirm.

Despite having been approached by the Oman Football Association with the proposition of taking their head coach job while Iran continues to show interest as well, he will remain with the USMNT for the time being. The interim manager will ‘consider his options’ after the final Nations League matches in late June, though USSF would like to hold onto Hudson through Gold Cup in July and August.

Hudson first joined US Soccer in January 2020, serving as head coach of the Under-20 side before becoming an assistant to Gregg Berhalter in 2021. The Englishman formed part of the USMNT coaching staff at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, gaining valuable experience.

In January 2023, then sporting director Earnie Stewart appointed Hudson as interim head coach of the senior team, hastily replacing Berhalter. The news came after U.S. Soccer confirmed the launch of an independent investigation into an allegation against the former manager on December 11, 2022.

Now, six months later, the search for a permanent replacement continues. New sporting director Matt Crocker, who was announced on April 25 but will officially join the organization full time in August, is to steer the scouting process.

Sources confirm Jesse Marsch “remains the leading candidate” for the position, but no final decision has been made. Before leaving his post in Southampton, Crocker attempted to sign Marsch as the Premier League team’s manager but talks broke down.

90min reported that the Saints were keen on Marsch after he impressed them in talks held in early February. Since leaving Leeds United, Marsch has turned down Leicester City as well.

Now, it’s looking like the former RB Leipzig manager will take the reins for the USMNT.
