Manchester City will look to take the next step in a possible 2022/23 treble when they face Sheffield United on Saturday at Wembley in the FA Cup semi finals.

Pep Guardiola’s side have hit form at an ideal time and were too good for Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter-final tie, running out 4-1 aggregate victors after a 1-1 draw in Bavaria on Wednesday evening.

Championship promotion hopefuls United have won six of their last seven games and have dispatched of Wrexham and Tottenham among others to reach their first FA Cup semi final since 2013.

Manchester City team news

Guardiola made a worrying admission after City secured their spot in the last four of the Champions League, claiming his side wouldn’t be physically ready for the semi final against the Blades due to their efforts in other competitions.

Nathan Ake needs to be assessed after picking up an injury in midweek. If he doesn’t make it, Aymeric Laporte may have to fulfil his all-action role on the left.

Manchester City predicted lineup (3-2-4-1): Ortega; Walker, Dias, Laporte; Stones, Rodri; Silva, De Bruyne, Alvarez, Grealish; Haaland.

Sheffield United team news

James McAtee and Tommy Doyle won’t be able to play against their parent club due to their loan agreement with City.

Ben Osborn, Rhian Brewster, Jack O’Connell, Rhys Norrington-Davies and Enda Stevens are all sidelined by injury, but the team should be similar to the XI Paul Heckingbottom picked to beat Bristol City 1-0 last time out.

Sheffield United predicted lineup (3-5-2): Foderingham; Ahmedhodzic, Egan, Robinson; Baldock, Berge, Norwood, Fleck, Lowe; McBurnie, Ndiaye.

There’s potential for the one of the greatest cupsets in English football history to take place on Saturday afternoon.

City look powerful approaching the final stretch of the season, having found solutions for the problems that have seen Arsenal lead the Premier League title race. Guardiola’s side completed the job against Bayern in midweek and may well be fatigued, though both sides have played the same amount of games (48) so far this season.

This may well be a fixture in the 2023/24 top flight if the Blades secure promotion, but right now City’s form and consistency is too hard to look past. They should comfortably book their spot in the FA Cup final and keep their treble hopes alive.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Sheffield United
