United States qualify for World Cup knockout stages
The United States are through to the knockout stages of the World Cup following their 1-0 victory over Iran on Tuesday.
Gregg Berhalter’s side headed into the day third in Group B, having drawn with both Wales and England earlier in the tournament, meaning they needed to beat Iran on the final day of the group stage to qualify.
They accomplished exactly that with an impressive 1-0 victory over Iran, led by Christian Pulisic’s strike in the first half.
The win means the United States finish second in Group B, earning themselves a meeting with the Netherlands, who finished top of Group A, in the round of 16.
Since the first World Cup in 1930, the United States have only advanced past the round of 16 once, in 2002, when they saw off Mexico before falling 1-0 to Germany in the quarter-final.
