While Udinese romped to a 4-0 victory at Fiorentina’s Artemio Franchi, Inter lost their game in hand against Bologna thanks to a truly calamitous goalkeeping gaffe from Ionut Radu, ceding the advantage to Milan in the race for the Serie A title.

Udinese’s midweek success was made all the more impressive given they achieved their victory without the impressive young forward Beto. The 11-goal 24-year-old has missed the last four games with a hamstring problem that is expected to sideline him until early May.

Second-choice goalkeeper Antonio Santurro is also a doubt with a meniscus injury.

There was a pretty sizeable absentee from Inter’s starting XI on Wednesday night as their goalkeeper and captain Samir Handanovic was forced onto the bench for the trip to Bologna with abdominal issues.

Handanovic gave a distraught Radu the cold shoulder when Inter left the pitch and faces a race against time to appear this weekend.

The winter arrival Robin Gosens was also unavailable with a muscle injury he hasn’t shaken off while Felipe Caicedo and Arturo Vidal didn’t travel with the squad but may be available this weekend.

Alessandro Bastoni is suffering from muscle fatigue and midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu picked up a suspension-inducing tenth yellow card of the season in midweek.

One set of results cannot cloud nine months worth of performances. Udinese may have been the victors in midweek but Inter are favourites to swiftly return to winning ways this weekend.

However, that’s not to say that the Friuli-based outfit are limp pushovers. With 13 points from six games in April they are in good form and have scored 32 goals in the 18 matches since Gabriele Cioffi took over in December, a tally only three Serie A sides can beat.

Inter are one of those clubs and may well right the wrongs of Wednesday night this Sunday.
