Emma Hayes insists ’no one comes close‘ to Sam Kerr
Emma Hayes has said that there isn’t a striker in world football that can come close to being comparable to Sam Kerr after the Australian striker popped up with another crucial winner against Tottenham in Chelsea’s quest to be crowned WSL champions.
The Blues were 2-1 victors over Spurs on Thursday evening, with Kerr’s header on the cusp of half time – less than a minute after Kerys Harrop had equalised for the visitors – proving decisive.
The result leaves Hayes‘ side two wins away from being crowned WSL champions for the third season on the bounce.
„She’s such a top player, in every way,“ Hayes said at full-time. „You go and look at her all round stats as a centre-forward and no one comes close to her in this league, maybe worldwide.
„She has the contributions to team goals, her own goalscoring record. Her work rate is phenomenal; on Sunday she ran her socks off, and yet she’s run for another 90 minutes her. Unbelievable team player, will do anything for the team and so deserving of what she’s getting and the recognition she’s getting.“
It was not the first time Kerr has provided a vital goal for Chelsea this season. Thursday’s header was her 18th goal in 18 WSL appearances this term, which has also included a last minute winner against Aston Villa, and the Blues‘ second in their 10-player 3-1 victory over Spurs on Sunday.
The result leaves Chelsea four points clear of second place Arsenal – although the Gunners do have a game in hand – and means if the Blues win their remaining two fixtures, they will be crowned champions of England once more.
However, this will not be straightforward, with Chelsea’s final two fixtures against a Birmingham side fighting for survival and Champions League chasing Manchester United.
„You know what, they’re [Tottenham] a good team and they’ve taken big points off other teams so we knew these teams were going to be difficult,“ Kerr said at full-time.
„Not going to lie, we’ve been eyeing these games for a while. With the cancellations it all adds up. It’s nice to finally have those two done and now we can focus on the final two. And we play for Chelsea, we love this stuff.“
