Tottenham in talks with Mauricio Pochettino over sensational return

Tottenham Hotspur have held talks with PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino over returning to the club this summer.

Pochettino was controversially sacked in 2019 and replaced with Jose Mourinho, who failed to inspire positive change at the club and was himself given his marching orders just a few months ago after a vicious downturn in form.

Spurs are now on the lookout for a long-term replacement. The idea of bringing Pochettino back was first revealed a few days ago, but now The Athletic have taken things to another level by revealing Spurs have held talks with their former boss over a dramatic reunion.

The players have been made aware of the situation and are understood to be excited by the idea of working with Pochettino, who is also keen to return to a club who value him so highly after a tumultuous five months in Paris.

Pochettino’s failure to lead PSG to either Ligue 1 or Champions League glory has seen him come under close scrutiny by those in the boardroom at the Parc des Princes, with numerous reports suggesting he could well be sacked in the near future.

Firstly, La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that PSG’s owners have ordered sporting director Leonardo to look for replacements for Pochettino after growing frustrated at the team’s perfomances, with this report suggesting former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is on their list.

Le10Sport said the same, before AS journalist Andres Onrubia backed up those claims and added that the relationship between Pochettino and Leonardo is already in tatters just months after the pair first linked up.

While it’s though PSG would prefer to avoid another managerial upheaval, there are concerns that Pochettino might not be the right man for the job and seeing Spurs pay to terminate his contract may well be too good of an offer to turn down.

In the meantime, Spurs are looking at all their options and were recently revealed to be in talks with Belgium manager Roberto Martinez.

Brighton’s Graham Potter is also on the radar, unlike Nuno Espirito Santo, who is not thought to be in the running after announcing his departure from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
