Arsenal ‚express shock interest‘ in Liverpool target Anthony Gordon

Arsenal are the latest side to be linked with a move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Gordon, whose dazzling individual campaign last season was rewarded by a call-up to the England squad for Euro 2024, was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool earlier this summer, with some reports even going as far as to claim a deal worth an overall £75m was agreed between the two clubs before Newcastle avoided PSR sanctions through the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson instead.

The Daily Mail state Newcastle have opened talks with Gordon over a new contract, but that has not stopped Arsenal from lodging their interest.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is said to be a huge fan of the 23-year-old and could pursue a move for Gordon next summer if he can maintain his impressive form.

Newcastle’s willingness to entertain Gordon’s departure earlier this summer when they were scrambling to raise money has led to some behind-the-scenes tensions, although the arrival of new sporting director Paul Mitchell has helped as he, along with manager Eddie Howe, is known to be determined to keep hold of the winger.

Howe has openly admitted his disappointment towards Newcastle’s transfer business. Aside from making Lewis Hall’s loan from Chelsea permanent, the Magpies have only added goalkeepers Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy, defender Lloyd Kelly and young forward William Osula, with a push for £70m-rated Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi set to end in failure.

„I understand [fan frustration] and I share it,“ Howe said. „That’s why I say we are all in this together. From ownership to me to the supporters we need one United cause and the cause has to be against everybody else that we are playing.

„What we can’t do as a football club is tear ourselves apart, we have to be united now more than ever. That starts from me to the board to the supporters.

„And how ever challenging the conditions, whatever the frustrations people will feel, the biggest thing for me is to get behind the players in every way, then of course for the supporters, as they have done from day one, is to do the same. I think we are a formidable force when we are linked together and are strong and united.“
