Copa America 2024 Group D preview

Business

Brazil and Colombia will look to dominate in Group D against Costa Rica and Paraguay to book their places in the quarter-finals of Copa America 2024.

Last and most certainly not least, Group D rounds out the group stage this summer with one of the favorites headlining the set of teams. The pressure will be on for Brazil to at minimum reach the final while Colombia could fancy their chances of a deep run with Luis Diaz leading the charge on the wing.

There’s no denying it: Costa Rica and Paraguay head into the tournament as underdogs in Group C. Paraguay could pose problems for Colombia and make things interesting, but Costa Rica will likely end their group stage campaign with zero points.

Here’s 90min’s guide to Group D in this summer’s Copa America.

Even without Neymar headlining the squad, Brazil remain one of the favorites to take home Copa America to add to their enviable trophy cabinet.

The South American powerhouse can still rely on the likes of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Gabriel and captain Marquinhos to lead their quest of winning the tournament for the 10th time. Just imagine if we managed to see Brazil and Argentina meet in the final, what a game of soccer that would be.

As long as Colombia don’t do anything daft, they should have enough in them to secure safe passage to the quarter-finals.

Of course, the likes of Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez will steal the spotlight, but fellow teammates Yerson Mosquera, Jefferson Lerma and Luis Sinisterra will all have parts to play if Colombia are to climb out of Group D.

If Costa Rica ever needed a player to have a breakout tournament and step up to lead the team, now is the perfect opportunity for Manfred Ugalde to do just that.

With Keylor Navas announcing his retirement from Costa Rica just a couple weeks ago, Ugalde will look to lead by example to try to pull off upsets in Group D. Navas‘ leadership and experience will be sorely missed in the Costa Rica camp, but that also means Kevin Chamorro will be given the chance to make the No. 1 shirt his own.

Although Paraguay’s squad has yet to be confirmed, there a few key players you can expect to make the roster in a bid to reach the knockout phase.

The likes of Miguel Almiron and Matias Rojas are likely to occupy the wings, while Fabian Balbuena and Omar Alderete hold down the backline. Like Costa Rica, Paraguay do have some solid options here and there, but it will be an uphill battle for them to magically qualify for the quarter-finals.
