Amadou Onana reveals transfer wish amid links to top clubs in Premier League and Europe
Amadou Onana has revealed he is hoping his performances at Euro 2024 this summer can earn him a big-money transfer to a ‚top club‘.
The midfielder was one of Everton’s key players in their fight against the drop this season, helping the Toffees to a respectable 15th-place finish in the Premier League despite receiving an eight-point deduction.
His performances have not gone unnoticed and the 22-year-old has been linked with some of the England’s top sides. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have all been touted as potential destinations, while Barcelona’s interest has been well-documented in recent months.
Onana’s stock within the Belgium national team is also rising and he heads to the European Championship with 11 caps at senior level to his name so far.
Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Onana admitted he hopes that such clubs will firm up their transfer interest off the back of his campaign at Euro 2024.
„At previous tournaments you have seen that the players who did well make the step up to the top clubs. That’s something I strive for,“ Onana said.
„I feel like presenting myself to the European top and showing what I have to offer. This European Championship is a stage.“
Onana made 37 appearances in all competitions for Everton this season, though many of his appearances in the last couple of months of the campaign came from the bench.
He joined the Toffees for an initial £33m after one season at French side Lille in the summer of 2022, spurning the chance to sign for West Ham United in the process.
Onana’s Belgium head into Euro 2024 as one of the major nations that are not considered among the favourites to go all the way. Of the key players from their ‚golden generation‘, only Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen remain in the core squad, with Thibaut Courtois missing out having only just returned from two major knee injuries.
